Native American Ceramics were created in natural spaces with natural methods. This includes making their own brushes, harvesting their own clay from native sources, making their own pigments from ground up rocks, and pit firing out on the land. Above all this, perhaps, is the spirituality practiced in this creative process. Maria Martinez exemplifies quality in these processes.
Contemporary American ceramics artist Mark Chuck utilizes a studio and more modern creation processes, but he too pulls his energy from Earth-centered practices, as his avid fishing lifestyle informs and fuels his entire body of work. In this, he also experiences an Earth-bound spirituality evident in his outcomes.
I recognize the truth in what both of these artists note and communicate. In this project, I endeavored to represent my own understanding of a piece of the land. I so look forward to continue the work I started in my future projects.
